Green Success Story: Reducing Injuries and Illnesses

The majority of injuries and OSHA recordables at our Goodrich’s Foley, Alabama Aerostructures facility, from the past year-and-a-half, came from employees who had worked less than one year. In April of 2006, the team held a Kaizen event to address the top three injuries and the causes. It was determined that a majority of the incidents were lacerations to the finger. From this event, they implemented two countermeasures, use of cut resistant gloves and a new hire orientation.

In May 2006, a new hire orientation devoted strictly to EHS was introduced. On the first day of work, an employee now spends at least one to two hours with on-site EHS engineers. This reduced the percentage of recordables attributed to new employees from 86% to 15%.
