History & Innovation

For over five decades, Goodrich Sensors and Integrated Systems’ rich history of innovation has impacted nearly every commercial and military aircraft in the free world.

The Beginning
Goodrich Sensors and Integrated Systems began in 1956 as the Rosemount Engineering Company. It was founded by Dr. Frank Werner, Robert Keppel and Vernon Heath. The company’s first product, a sensor that measured total temperature for aircraft, was developed and manufactured in a building that had once been a chicken hatchery. Within one year, the Rosemount Engineering Company had a full-time operation with 28 employees.

1960s

  • Our instruments were part of the first American-in-space mission with the Mercury-Redstone 3 spacecraft
  • Our products orbited earth with astronaut John Glenn
  • Air data (pitot and pitot-static) probes were introduced to our product portfolio
  • Our oxygen, pressure and temperature sensors made up part of Neil Armstrong’s backpack as he took his first step on the moon during the Apollo 11 lunar mission
  • Magnetostrictive ice detectors were first introduced to the military market
  • We entered the angle of attack market through the acquisition of Monitair

1970s

  • Apollo 14 carried 150 of our instruments on its mission to the moon
  • We were chosen to supply the pneumatic sensor assembly for General Dynamics’ F-16 aircraft
  • We were awarded the first commercial contract for the angle-of-attack by Boeing for their 757/767 aircraft

1980s

  • We broke ground for the solid state technology center
  • The team delivered 75,000th total temperature sensor and 200,000th pitot probe
  • We introduced two new product lines: thin-film temperature sensor and the optical pyrometer
  • Our team received the Silver Snoopy award from NASA
  • The Space Shuttle Discovery returned to space equipped with more than 10,000 of our sensors
  • We supplied Boeing with the world’s first primary ice detection system
  • The Space Shuttle Atlantis launched with our platinum resistance temperature on board

1990s

  • The company was acquired by BFGoodrich Company
  • We entered the engine FADEC pressure market by licensing silicon capacitive pressure sensor technology from UTC/Hamilton Standard
  • We acquired the aerospace product line of Weed Instrument Company including engine total temperature, surface and immersion temperature sensors
  • We acquired optical ice detection capability with the acquisition of RVSI
  • We acquired Advanced Micro Machines, a leading developer of micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS)

2000 and Beyond

  • We entered the inertial market through the acquisition of Humphrey, Inc., a manufacturer of numerous types of gyros and associated inertial products
  • The team developed one of the first cockpit door surveillance (video) systems, which was selected for Airbus aircraft
  • We introduced laser perimeter awareness system to meet customers’ increased security demands for critical infrastructure
  • Several Goodrich companies were consolidated under Sensors and Integrated Systems, including De-Icing Systems, Fuel Utility Systems and Hoist and Winch, to provide more fully integrated systems and allow SIS to command more attention in the marketplace
  • We acquired TEAC Aerospace Technologies which brought complementary flight recording/military briefing products into our portfolio
  • Our SmartProbe™ air data system became the air data system of choice for new commercial, regional, business and military platforms

Goodrich Sensors and Integrated Systems will continue to strive to be the preferred supplier of higher level integrated system solutions to the global aerospace market by leveraging and expanding our core technologies. By seeing opportunity where others see obstacles, we continue to position ourselves as an industry leader in the development of innovative solutions to meet the ever changing business demands of our customers.
