Dr. B.F. Goodrich

Benjamin Franklin Goodrich was born on November 4, 1841 in Ripley, New York. He trained to be a physician and received his M.D. from Western Reserve College in Cleveland, Ohio. He served as a surgeon with the Union Army in the Civil War.

1895 - First Research Lab in the US

Research and development has always been very important to Goodrich. During its first 20 years the company became a pioneer in the rubber industry. The first rubber research laboratory was set up by Charles Cross Goodrich, the son of the founder, in 1895.

Early Days of Flight

The “Pioneer Era” of flight (1900-1914) saw amazing attempts at mastering the skies. Although research into how man might fly had been going on for centuries (even Leonardo DaVinci had a go), it was not until the time of industrialization and advancements in science that allowed these pioneering aviators to take great leaps in aviation.

1919 – Vickers Vimy

In 1891, the London Daily Mail offered a £10,000 prize for someone to fly non-stop across the Atlantic. There were many attempts, but it was not until 1919 that two Royal Air Force officers, John Alcock and Arthur Whitten-Brown, actually succeeded in making the crossing. Goodrich equiped this pioneering flight with electrical equipment and carburetors.
